Begin with curiosity
Ask young people what interests them, what they would like to learn and what questions they have about the future. Their answers can open conversations about strengths, opportunities and the support they need.
Notice effort and growth
Recognise the thought, practice or courage behind an action. Talking about the steps a young person took can make encouragement more specific and useful than a general compliment.
Make choices a conversation
Explore options together. Ask what a next step would involve, what resources might help and who could offer guidance. Leave room for a young person’s perspective while discussing responsibilities and practical limits.
Guidance can open a door while leaving room for a young person to take the next step.
Connect with positive support
Trusted adults, teachers and mentors can help young people explore their interests. Discover our teenage empowerment and mentorship focus area, or consider how your experience could contribute through volunteering.
